Uncovering oil giants’ toxic air pollution on children and planet – BBC News

Oil giants’ toxic air pollution on children and the planet in southern Iraq has been revealed in a BBC News Arabic investigation.

Gas flaring is the term for burning off the gas for oil production. The process is known to emit benzene – which heightens the risk of cancer, particularly childhood leukaemia.

As part of the investigation, scientists monitored pollution and took urine samples from children, from communities neighbouring four different oil fields within 10km of gas flaring in Rumaila, Basra, to see if it was linked to the exposure.

The BBC also found millions of tonnes of undeclared emissions from gas flaring at oil fields where BP, Emi and others work.

The companies said their reporting method was standard industry practice.
